Not Everyone Deserves What You Give

There is a difference between becoming less generous and becoming more discerning.

Some people learn this only after pouring years of time, energy, loyalty, patience, forgiveness, and love into people who treated those things as if they were endlessly renewable.

When you are naturally a giver, your instinct is often to give more when something is struggling… More patience… More understanding… Another chance… Another conversation… Another piece of yourself.

But generosity without discernment can become self-abandonment.

Like most things, there is a healthy balance to be found in this.

Not everyone deserves the same access to you. Not everyone should receive the same amount of your time, your energy, your trust, or your heart simply because you are capable of giving it.

What you have to offer has value, and recognizing that value means becoming thoughtful about where you pour it. I find the older I get, the more I realize this.

This does not mean becoming cold. It does not mean keeping score or demanding that every act of kindness be repaid. Genuine generosity should still be generous. Love should still be love.

It simply means learning the difference between someone who appreciates what you pour into their life and someone who has merely become comfortable consuming it.

A cracked vessel does not become whole because you keep pouring into it. Eventually, you simply become empty while everything you gave spills onto the ground.

Protecting what you have to give is not selfishness.

Sometimes it is wisdom earned the hard way.

Keep your generous heart.

Just become more selective about where you pour it.
