The Voices We Listen To

There is a timeless thought that if Satan (or the Enemy) could convince angels to abandon heaven, imagine what he could convince ordinary people to abandon. Whether you understand that story literally, spiritually, or metaphorically, there is a profound lesson to be recognized within it… Even those who endeavor to dwell in the light can sometimes be persuaded to walk into darkness.

And perhaps that is what can make influence so dangerous. It rarely announces itself as destruction. It often arrives disguised as understanding, concern, opportunity, friendship, comfort, or even love. The voices that lead us astray don’t always sound threatening. Sometimes they sound soothing and safe. Sometimes they tell us exactly what we want to hear. Sometimes they speak so convincingly to our insecurities, desires, and fears that we mistake their persuasion for our own wisdom.

Think about how much of our lives is shaped by the voices we allow into our minds. A bitter person can convince us to become suspicious of love. An insecure person can persuade us to question our worth. A dishonest person can make dishonesty seem reasonable. A fearful person can talk us out of opportunities we once dreamed of pursuing. And a person who has surrendered to their own misery can make our happiness seem foolish, selfish, or undeserved.

But here’s something worth considering… Not every voice that leads us into darkness belongs to someone else.

Sometimes the most convincing voice is our own. The voice that tells us we’re not good enough. The voice that encourages resentment, justifies cruelty, excuses our behavior, or convinces us that our circumstances have left us no choice. Sometimes our darkness is holding a megaphone as our light whispers. We can become remarkably persuasive when defending the very habits, beliefs, and decisions that are destroying our peace. We can be masters of self-destruction.

And this is why discernment matters so much. Not everyone who agrees with you is your friend. Not everyone who challenges you is your enemy. Not every comforting word is good advice, and not every uncomfortable truth is an attack. Some people will tell you what you want to hear because they care more about being liked than being honest. Others will risk your disapproval because they genuinely care about your well-being.

We must also recognize that influence is not always a dramatic moment of persuasion. Sometimes it is a gradual erosion. A small compromise here. A justified resentment there. A little more bitterness, a little less compassion, a little more fear, a little less courage. Until one day we look around and realize we have traveled an extraordinary distance from the person we once intended to become… without ever consciously deciding to stray from the course.

So be mindful of the voices you entertain, the perspectives you adopt, and the beliefs you allow to take root within you. Remember, discernment matters… Listen carefully, question thoughtfully, and remember that the loudest voice is not necessarily the wisest, the most agreeable voice is not necessarily the kindest, and the most familiar voice is not necessarily telling you the truth.

Because sometimes the greatest danger isn’t that someone will force you into a life you never wanted…

It’s that someone will convince you to choose it yourself.
