Learning What Not to Become

Inspiration does not always arrive as an example to follow. Sometimes it arrives as a warning.

There are people who teach you about integrity by showing you what life looks like without it.  People who teach you about kindness by making you feel the absence of it. People who teach you about loyalty, honesty, humility, and respect by forcing you to experience what happens when those things are missing.

Cutting through the heavy layer of my own hypocrisy, I recognize moments in my life where I have been both the student and the teacher of these lessons. 

It is easy to resent those lessons because they often hurt. But eventually, if you are paying attention, you realize they gave you something useful.

They helped define your standards… They clarified your values… They showed you, with painful precision, the kind of person you never want to become… or be, again. 

Growth is not only about collecting role models. Sometimes it is about recognizing anti-models… people whose choices quietly become instructions for your own life. If you allow for honest and critical observation, they offer a behavioral map. 

And some maps are important to have because you DON’T want to end up where they lead.
